Rules

The rules below summarize the official Internship Handbook. The Handbook is the binding source. Consult it and departmental announcements if you are uncertain.

General Information

  • All Industrial Engineering (IE) students must complete at least 40 workdays of internship during the four-year undergraduate program. The 40-day internship requirement is a condition for graduation.
  • Double major (ÇAP) students: if your primary major is IE, the same requirements apply (40 workdays, at least 15 in production). If your primary major is not IE, only at least 15 workdays of Production Internship are required on the IE side — the 40-day total requirement does not apply.
  • Minor (Yandal) students have no internship requirement on the IE side.
  • At least 15 of the 40 days must be in production. This is the only type requirement: the remaining days carry no type restriction — they may be completed as a General IE Internship, or as further Production Internship days beyond the 15-day minimum. Finance, marketing, IT, and similar roles are accepted as General IE Internships.
  • The internship type is determined before the internship starts, and the report is written accordingly. You may consult the internship assistants if you are unsure, but final approval belongs to the Internship advisor.
  • Submit a signed and stamped Trainee Evaluation Form and the Student Internship Survey with the internship report.
  • Insurance: By law, Boğaziçi University insures all interns against occupational accidents and illnesses during their internships. The required steps are explained under Before the Internship.

Internship Rules

  • Internships must be completed during summer or semester breaks, when you are not taking courses. An internship is not accepted on dates when you are taking courses in the Fall semester, the Spring semester, or Summer School. You may complete an internship during Summer School if you are not enrolled in courses.
  • Students are generally advised to begin internships after completing their fourth-semester courses. Irregular students may also begin after the third semester.
  • Each internship must last at least 15 workdays. The workplace, department, and internship type cannot change during that period.
  • A Production Internship must involve applying concepts from IE courses in a production or manufacturing context. Office roles connected to production also count as production. Examples include supply chain, production planning, ERP, and quality. Obtain approval from the Internship advisor for borderline cases. See the Topic Guide for details.
  • Work completed in a university setting does not count as an internship.
  • Transfer students: Workdays from previous internships may count toward the General IE Internship.
  • Internships may be completed abroad. Most rules still apply, but Türkiye-specific procedures such as the EK-1, government contribution, and insurance do not. Consult the Internship advisor or assistants first.

Report and Submission Rules

  • Prepare the report according to the Outline for Internship Report. You may direct questions to the internship assistants before submission.
  • The report must be written in English. Tables and figures may be included; company information provided in Turkish does not have to be translated.
  • The report may be no longer than 20 pages, excluding appendices.
  • Submit the report within 21 days of the start of the following semester.
  • A specific deadline is announced for each term and shown on the Submission page. It may differ from the general 21-day rule; the announced deadline is binding.
  • If you complete an internship during a Boğaziçi academic term, for example while on Erasmus or another exchange program, submit the report within three weeks of completing the internship. Late-submission rules apply otherwise.
  • Submit the Trainee Evaluation Form and Student Internship Survey with the report. See After the Internship for details.

Late-submission penalty

One workday is deducted from your total internship days for each day the report or any other required document is late. Submission is not considered complete until all missing documents are provided.

Topic Guide

The main body of your report should address topics relevant to your internship type. You do not have to cover every item in the list below; select a few relevant topics and examine them in depth.

A Production Internship is completed in a production or manufacturing context; office roles connected to production also count. Even if you are not directly involved in manufacturing, you are expected to apply concepts from IE courses. An IE supervisor is preferred but not required. You should have worked on at least two or three of these areas:

  • Process analysis
  • Production planning and scheduling
  • Production or project management
  • Capacity measurement and efficiency analysis
  • Facility layout, material handling, and warehousing
  • Demand forecasting
  • Inventory management
  • Resource allocation and detailed scheduling
  • Inbound and outbound logistics planning
  • Production technologies such as JIT, CIM, FMS, GT, and CAD/CAM
  • Ergonomics and human factors
  • Work, method, and time studies
  • Lean production and Six Sigma
  • Quality planning and control, including statistical quality control
  • Production-oriented ERP modules; data entry alone is not accepted

A General IE Internship may be completed in any non-production role related to industrial engineering; a service industry is not required. Common fields include information technology, healthcare, finance, transportation, communications, consulting, tourism management, marketing, investment planning, operations planning, project management, human resources, human factors, and occupational health and safety.

  • Apply the IE tools and techniques listed above in a service or management context.
  • A General IE Internship may also be completed in a public institution or NGO. Examples include the Turkish Red Crescent, KALDER, and the Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey. Students wishing to intern at an NGO must obtain verbal permission from the Internship advisor.
  • Production Internship days beyond the requirement may also count toward the General IE Internship.
