Rules

The rules below are summarised from the official Internship Handbook. The Internship Handbook is the binding text; if in doubt, consult the Handbook and departmental announcements.

  1. 1.140 workdaysThe total internship period is a graduation requirement.
  2. 1.415 workdays in productionThe remaining days are not restricted by type.
  3. 2.3At least 15 workdaysRequired for an internship to be accepted; the workplace cannot change during this period.

General Information

  1. 1.1

    All Industrial Engineering (IE) students must complete at least 40 workdays of internship during the 4-year undergraduate programme. The 40-workday internship is a graduation requirement.

  2. 1.2

    Double major (ÇAP) students: if your primary major is IE, the same requirements apply (40 workdays, at least 15 workdays of Production Internship). If your primary major is not IE, only at least 15 workdays of Production Internship are required on the IE side; the 40-workday total does not apply.

  3. 1.3

    Minor (yandal) students have no internship requirement on the IE side.

  4. 1.4

    At least 15 of the 40 workdays must be Production Internship. This is the only type requirement: the remaining days are not restricted by type; they may be completed as General IE Internship, and Production Internship beyond 15 workdays also counts towards them. Finance, marketing, information technology and similar roles are accepted as General IE Internship.

  5. 1.5

    The internship type is determined before the internship begins, and the report is prepared accordingly. If you are unsure of your internship type, you may consult the internship assistants; final approval rests with the internship coordinator.

  6. 1.6

    The signed and stamped Trainee Evaluation Form and the Student Internship Survey must be submitted with the internship report.

  7. 1.7

    Insurance: by law, Boğaziçi University insures all interns against occupational accidents and occupational diseases during the internship. The steps to follow are explained under Before the Internship.

Internship Rules

  1. 2.1

    Internships take place during summer or semester breaks, when you are not taking courses. An internship on dates when you are taking courses (Fall, Spring or Summer School) is not accepted; if you are not taking courses at Summer School, you may complete an internship during that period.

  2. 2.2

    Students are generally advised to begin internships after completing their 4th-semester courses. Irregular students may also begin after the 3rd semester.

  3. 2.3

    An internship must last at least 15 workdays to be accepted. The workplace, department and internship type cannot change during this period.

  4. 2.4

    A Production Internship must take place in a production or manufacturing context and involve the practical application of concepts from IE courses. Office roles connected to production also count as production. Examples include supply chain, production planning, ERP and quality. In borderline cases, obtain the approval of the internship coordinator. See the Topic Guide for details.

  5. 2.5

    Work carried out in a university setting is not accepted as an internship.

  6. 2.6

    Transfer students: workdays from previous internships may count towards the General IE Internship.

  7. 2.7

    Internships may also be completed abroad. Most rules also apply to internships abroad; however, Türkiye-specific procedures such as the EK-1, the government contribution and insurance do not apply. You may first consult the internship coordinator or the internship assistants.

Report and Submission Rules

  1. 3.1

    The report must be prepared as set out in the Outline for Internship Report. You may send any questions to the internship assistants before submission.

  2. 3.2

    The report must be written in English. Tables and figures may be included; company information provided in Turkish does not have to be translated into English.

  3. 3.3

    The report must not exceed 20 pages, excluding appendices.

  4. 3.4

    The report must be submitted within 21 days of the start of the following semester.

  5. 3.5

    The applicable deadline is announced separately each term and shown on the Document Submission page; it may differ from the general 21-day rule. The announced deadline is binding.

  6. 3.6

    If you complete an internship during a Boğaziçi academic term, for example while on Erasmus or another exchange programme, the report must be submitted within 3 weeks of the end of the internship; otherwise the late-submission rules apply.

  7. 3.7

    The Trainee Evaluation Form and the Student Internship Survey are submitted with the report. Details are given under After the Internship.

  8. 3.8

    A separate report must be prepared for each internship; different internships completed at the same company are also submitted with separate reports.

Topic Guide

The topics you are expected to address in the main body of the report, according to your internship type, are listed below. You are not required to cover every topic in the list; it is sufficient to examine a few topics relevant to your internship type in depth.

Production Internship

A Production Internship takes place in a production or manufacturing context; office roles connected to production also count. Even if you are not directly involved in manufacturing, you are expected to apply what you have learnt in IE courses. An IE supervisor is preferred but not required. You are expected to have worked in at least 2–3 of the following areas:

  • Process analysis
  • Production planning and scheduling
  • Production or project management
  • Capacity measurement and efficiency analysis
  • Facility layout, material handling, and warehousing
  • Demand forecasting
  • Inventory management
  • Resource allocation and detailed scheduling
  • Inbound and outbound logistics planning
  • Production technologies such as JIT, CIM, FMS, GT, and CAD/CAM
  • Ergonomics and human factors
  • Work, method, and time studies
  • Lean production and Six Sigma
  • Quality planning and control, including statistical quality control
  • Production-oriented ERP modules; data entry alone is not accepted

General IE Internship

A General IE Internship may be completed in any non-production role related to industrial engineering. Common fields include information technology, healthcare, finance, transportation, communications, consulting, tourism management, marketing, investment planning, operations planning, project management, human resources, human factors, and occupational health and safety.

  • The IE tools and techniques listed above are applied in a service or management context.
  • A General IE Internship may also be completed in a public institution or NGO. Examples include the Turkish Red Crescent, KALDER and the Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey. If you wish to intern at an NGO, obtain verbal permission from the internship coordinator.
  • Production internship days beyond the requirement may also count towards the General IE Internship.
