Eligibility & Timing
Do I find my own internship, or does the department place me?
You find the internship yourself. The department does not place students directly. Internship postings and announcements are sent to students registered through the Internship Registration Form. The form is only for announcements and the internship database; it does not assign you to a company.
Do I need to register in the system or database before starting?
Yes. Complete the Internship Registration Form to join the internship database and receive announcements. See Before the Internship.
When can I complete an internship? Can I do one during an academic term?
Complete internships during periods when you are not taking courses, such as summer or semester breaks. The deciding factor is whether you are taking courses, not the name of the term. Internship dates cannot overlap with a Fall semester, Spring semester, or Summer School in which you are enrolled in courses. If you are not taking courses because you have completed them or are on an exchange program, you may complete an internship during the term. A special submission deadline then applies; see the questions below and the Rules.
After which semester may I begin an internship?
Students are generally advised to begin after completing the fourth-semester courses. Irregular students may also begin after the third semester. See the Rules.
Can I complete an internship while attending Summer School?
The deciding factor is whether you are taking courses. Internship dates cannot overlap with Summer School courses. If there is a special circumstance, such as graduation, first consult the internship assistants and then the Internship advisor. If you are not taking courses, you may complete the internship normally.
I will not take courses during the term. Can I complete an internship?
Yes. If you are taking no courses because you have completed them or are on Erasmus or another exchange program, you may complete an internship during that term. A special report deadline applies: submit the report within three weeks of completing the internship. See the Rules.
I have completed my courses and am close to graduation. Can I complete an internship?
You may complete an internship while your student registration remains active and before you graduate. If you are unsure, consult your academic advisor or the internship assistants.
Can I complete an internship abroad?
Yes. Most rules also apply to internships abroad, but Türkiye-specific procedures such as the EK-1, government contribution, and insurance do not. Consult the Internship advisor or assistants first.
Are part-time or remote internships accepted?
Remote internships are accepted, and the days count normally. The internship must still be full-time; part-time internships are not accepted.
Can my current job or long-term internship count as my compulsory internship?
Yes, provided that it complies with the internship rules. You may complete a compulsory internship as part of a longer program.
I am a transfer student. Do my previous internships count?
Workdays from previous internships may count toward your General IE Internship.
I am a double-major (ÇAP) student. Is my internship-day requirement different?
It depends on your primary major. If your primary major is IE, the requirements are the same: 40 workdays, including at least 15 Production Internship days. If your primary major is not IE, only at least 15 workdays of Production Internship are required on the IE side — the 40-day total requirement does not apply. See the Rules.
I am a minor (Yandal) student. Do I need to complete an internship for IE?
No. Minor students have no internship requirement on the IE side.
Does work at a university or as a research assistant count?
No. Work completed in a university setting, including research assistantships, does not count as an internship. See the Rules.
Duration & Workday Counting
How many internship days are required for graduation?
You must complete 40 workdays in total. The only type requirement is that at least 15 days must be a Production Internship; the remaining days carry no type restriction — they may be a General IE Internship, or further Production Internship days.
What is the minimum length of one internship?
Each internship must last at least 15 workdays to be accepted.
Can I split my internship requirement across companies or periods?
Yes. You may complete the 40 workdays at different companies or during different periods. Each internship must last at least 15 workdays, and the total must include at least 15 Production Internship days.
Do Saturdays and public holidays count as workdays?
A Saturday counts if you obtain a signed or stamped Saturday Work Letter from the company and submit it with the report. Public holidays do not count.
Can I take leave during the internship?
Leave is decided by the company; department approval is not required. If the company grants leave, you may take it, but those days are deducted from your internship days.
Can I complete more than 40 days? Is there a maximum?
University insurance is intended for the compulsory internship, so keep the total as close to 40 days as reasonably possible. There is no defined maximum. Consult the internship assistants before beginning a substantially longer internship.
Internship Type
Can I change my internship type later?
No. The type is determined before the internship starts, and you cannot change the workplace, department, or type during the same internship. If you are unsure, consult the internship assistants first; final approval belongs to the Internship advisor.
What qualifies as a Production Internship?
A Production Internship must involve applying tools and concepts from IE courses in a production or manufacturing context. Office roles connected to production also count, including supply chain, production planning, ERP, and quality. For borderline cases, consult the internship assistants and then the Internship advisor before the internship begins. See the Rules and Topic Guide.
What qualifies as a General IE Internship?
Non-production roles related to industrial engineering count as General IE Internships, including finance, marketing, IT, and consulting. A service industry is not required. Any of the 40 required days outside the 15-day production minimum may fall into this category. See the Rules.
Must my workplace supervisor be an industrial engineer?
An industrial engineer is preferred but not required; another relevant engineer or manager may supervise you. Consult the Internship advisor if you are unsure whether a Production Internship is eligible.
Documents
Does the department issue documents beyond those on the Forms page?
No. The department does not issue additional documents beyond those on the Forms & Documents page. Obtain other required paperwork, such as a Saturday Work Letter or payment receipt, from your company.
Who completes each document?
- The student completes the EK-1 form, has the employer sign it, and sends it to the Internship advisor.
- The workplace completes, signs, and stamps the Trainee Evaluation Form.
- The student completes the internship timetable and Student Internship Survey.
- The company provides the signed or stamped Saturday Work Letter and payment receipt.
Where can I obtain the Compulsory Internship Letter?
Download the Turkish or English version from the Forms & Documents page.
When and to whom should I send the EK-1 form?
The EK-1 is used for insurance registration. Email it to refik.gullu@bogazici.edu.tr as a PDF smaller than 1 MB, no earlier than one week and no later than two days before the internship starts. The same form covers the government contribution if requested by the company. See Before the Internship.
How is the insurance process completed?
Complete the EK-1 form, have the employer sign it, and email it to the Internship advisor. After departmental approval, the Department of Accounting Affairs initiates the insurance premium registration and sends you an insurance registration confirmation. You cannot start the internship before registration is complete. See Before the Internship.
Are the EK-1 and the insurance form the same document?
Yes. Insurance registration is completed through the EK-1; there is no separate insurance form.
Can an internship be unpaid? Does the University still provide insurance?
Payment is not required, so an internship may be unpaid. By law, Boğaziçi University still provides the insurance. The government contribution applies only if requested by the company. See Before the Internship.
Can I change my internship dates after sending the EK-1?
No. Work dates cannot be changed except in the event of a serious health issue.
My insurance was opened through the EK-1 — what do I do once the internship ends?
Get a signed/stamped document from the company confirming you completed the internship on the declared dates, and send it to the Department of Accounting Affairs — no specific format is required; your internship start/end dates and identifying information are enough. Until this document reaches the Department of Accounting Affairs, a new insurance registration (a new EK-1) cannot be opened for your next internship — in other words, you won't be able to start your next internship without sending it. Details: After the Internship.
In which language should I write the report, and how long may it be?
Write the report in English. Sections 1–8, which form the main report, may be no longer than 20 pages excluding appendices.
Where is the timetable template?
It is on the Forms & Documents page under “Internship Timetable Template.” Use one row for each workday and four columns: Day, Work Accomplished, Page Nr., and Working Hours.
What is the Trainee Evaluation Form, and how do I submit it?
It is the official internship evaluation completed by your workplace. The blank form is available on the Forms & Documents page. It must be both signed and stamped; it will not be accepted if either is missing. Submit it with the report. It is a required document, so submission remains incomplete and the late penalty continues until the form is provided. See After the Internship.
May I submit documents signed with an electronic signature?
Yes. Documents signed with a valid electronic signature are accepted.
Submission & Results
When do I submit the documents?
Submit them online within 21 days of the start of the following semester, which is three weeks after classes begin. The current deadline is shown on the Submission page.
What happens if I submit late?
One day is deducted from your total internship days for each late day. A submission with missing documents is not considered complete.
How can I confirm that my report and documents were uploaded correctly?
A success confirmation appears when the upload is complete. If you still need confirmation, email the internship assistants and ask whether all documents were received. They will contact you if anything is missing. See Submission for upload instructions.
Where can I find my internship result?
Results are not published directly on this site. See the Results page for access instructions.
When are results announced?
There is no fixed schedule; results are announced periodically. If you have an urgent need related to graduation, inform the internship assistants in writing.
