Report Preparation

The internship report must be written in English, may be no longer than 20 pages excluding appendices, and must follow the outline below. See the Internship Handbook for the complete requirements.

At a Glance

  • Write the report in English and address the prompts in coherent paragraphs, not in a question-and-answer format.
  • The report may be no longer than 20 pages, excluding appendices.
  • It has eight sections: Cover Page, Executive Summary, Table of Contents, Timetable, Company Introduction, Internship Activities, Assessment, and Conclusions.
  • Write Internship Activities, the main body, from an industrial engineering perspective. Use the Topic Guide.

Report Outline

The report consists of the following eight sections:

1. Cover Page

Include:

  • Student name and ID
  • Internship start and end dates
  • Total number of internship days
  • Internship type: Production or General
  • Company or institution name

2. Executive Summary

Write approximately one page covering:

  • A brief introduction to the company or institution
  • A concise summary of the main activities completed during the internship

3. Table of Contents

List section headings with their page numbers.

4. Timetable

Each row represents one day of the internship. The template has four columns:

  • Day: Day of the week; the template already prints Monday through Saturday (no date field — the weekly date range at the top of the page covers that)
  • Work Accomplished: Work completed that day and discussed in Internship Activities
  • Page Nr.: The corresponding page in the report
  • Working Hours: Hours worked that day

Example:

Day Work Accomplished Page Nr. Working Hours
Tuesday Applied moving-average forecasting to sales data; measured error with MAD 14 8

5. Company/Organization Introduction

Address all six topics in coherent paragraphs rather than a question-and-answer format:

  • Full name, brief history, address, and website
  • Ownership structure, principal shareholders, and their shares
  • Industry and the products or services provided
  • Customers, including end users, retailers, other manufacturers, and employees
  • Organization chart and number of employees
  • Functions performed by industrial engineers in the organization

6. Internship Activities — Main Body

This is the main body of the report. Describe the work you completed during the internship from an industrial engineering perspective. Use the Topic Guide for the expected analyses and questions.

7. Assessment

Address the following four topics in coherent paragraphs:

  • Skills and qualifications you gained
  • Responsibilities you assumed
  • How the internship affected your future career plans
  • How your internship activities related to your coursework

8. Conclusions

Address the following two topics in coherent paragraphs:

  • Your main conclusions from the internship
  • Your observations about the industry
